Research

THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN  COMPRISES A DISTINCTIVE, SPECIALIST RESEARCH CULTURE ENCOMPASSING DESIGN HISTORY AND THEORY;  DESIGN FOR HEALTH AND CARE;  AND RESEARCH IN, ABOUT OR THROUGH CREATIVE PRACTICE, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREAS OF TEXTILE DESIGN AND PRINT CULTURES. TEACHING AT THE SCHOOL IS INFORMED DIRECTLY BY  ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT  FROM ACADEMIC STAFF  IN RESEARCH, CREATIVE PRACTICE AND SCHOLARSHIP.

As well as generating new knowledge and insights about and within the disciplines of contemporary design practice, history and theory, the School of Design researchers contribute to GSA’s cross-cutting interdisciplinary research themes: sustainable environment & economies; cultural landscape and identity; health & care; and history, heritage, archives & collections.

The School of Design is also home to a growing number of doctoral students, all of whom benefit from GSA’s membership in the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH).
