“Over 80 global exchange partners”

SOCIALLY AND CULTURALLY DIVERSE, THE GSA HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST NUMBERS OF INTERNATIONAL AND EU STUDENTS OF ANY UK VISUAL CREATIVE INSTITUTION OR FACULTY AND ONE OF SCOTLAND’S HIGHEST PERCENTAGES OF STUDENTS FROM MORE DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS.

In the School of Design at undergraduate level 64% of students are Scottish/EU, 23% of students are from RUK and 13% from the rest of the world. At Postgraduate level 24% of students are from Europe/UK and 76% from the rest of the world.

Recent international partnerships that have been developed include a number of leading institutions in China including Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Guangdong, China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and Tsinghua University in Beijing as well as post-Brexit strategic partners in Europe and Switzerland.

The School of Design has also established international articulations with The Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI); The Reykjavik School of Visual Arts (RSVA) as well as the School of the Arts, Singapore (SoTA).  These agreements allow students from partner institutes direct entry to years 2 or 3 of programmes in Glasgow.

The development of intercultural competencies through staff and student mobility is seen as key to developing a global understanding of design practice, and the GSA’s academic schools have relationships with partner institutes around the globe.  Collectively we have developed over 80 partnerships for student and staff exchange with partners across European including:

The School is also keen to foster international collaboration between partners and GSA staff, and has a number of Memorandum of Understanding in place to facilitate this.  These can range from in-country teaching and technical skill development – Designing for Machine Knitting at Myndlinstakolinn, in Iceland; to joint, real-time projects – The Mobile Lotus Health Clinic in Cambodia, with the GSA and Paris Belleville; through to joint research projects such as Common Craft in association with KHiO Oslo.
