Introduction

THE POSITION OF HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF design IS AN IMPORTANT LEADERSHIP ROLE FOR THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART.

THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN HAS AN INCREDIBLY RICH HERITAGE, WHICH CAN BE TRACED  BACK TO THE GSA’S ORIGINAL FOUNDING IN 1845  AS ONE OF THE UK’S FIRST GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS OF DESIGN.  SINCE THEN IT HAS PRODUCED SOME OF SCOTLAND’S MOST INFLUENTIAL DESIGN PRACTITIONERS WHO TOGETHER COMPRISE A GLOBAL CREATIVE NETWORK WORKING  ACROSS THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF DESIGN PRACTICE AND  THE  WIDER CREATIVE AND KNOWLEDGE ECONOMIES.

Design is fundamental to addressing the social, economic, ethical and sustainable challenges that face us today. In this there is a unique opportunity for the School of Design at The Glasgow School of Art to develop and innovate, to interrogate and advance some of the main questions about contemporary design practice and craft and redefine its role within it.

THE HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF design WILL NOT ONLY PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN FORMULATING THE FUTURE OF THE SCHOOL OF design BUT ALSO OF THE WIDER GSA. THE PREFERRED CANDIDATE WILL PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN OUR WIDER ACADEMIC AND CREATIVE LEADERSHIP AT A CRITICAL POINT AS WE EMBARK ON THE BUILDING OF A NEW STRATEGIC DIRECTION.

The unique qualities of being within a small, focused school of art also mean opportunities to work collaboratively.  As an international school of art, this means not just with colleagues across the GSA, but also with our academic, cultural, creative and commercial partners in the City and globally.

The city at our heart, Glasgow, is an important creative and cultural hub, one of only five Creative Capitals in the UK and ranked one of the leading in Europe.  The city attracts creative talent of the very highest calibre by reputation and by the promise of becoming part of its renowned creative and cultural community and quality of life.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR APPLICANTS THAT ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT LEARNING AND TEACHING, RESEARCH,  INNOVATION AND DEVELOPING EXTERNAL NETWORKS.  APPLICANTS WHO ARE TENACIOUS; AMBITIOUS; IMAGINATIVE; AND ARE GREAT COMMUNICATORS, INTERESTED IN HEARING WHAT THEIR COMMUNITY OF PRACTITIONERS WANTS TO DO NEXT AND WORKING WITH STAFF AND STUDENTS ACROSS THE SCHOOL TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.

Please take the time to interrogate these pages and watch the film at the heart of them to start to discover more. Applications for the role are made online, through the Apply link on this site.
