History

 

FOUNDED IN 1845 AS ONE OF THE UK’S FIRST GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS OF DESIGN, THE GSA CAN TRACE ITS LINEAGE TO THE 1750S AND THE ESTABLISHMENT, DURING THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT, OF THE FOULIS ACADEMY,  EUROPEAN IN ETHOS AND  THE UK’S FIRST SCHOOL OF ART.

NEARLY 270 YEARS LATER, WE ARE ONE OF THE UK’S LAST REMAINING INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS OF ART, design and architecture IN THE UK, RANKED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 ART AND DESIGN SCHOOLS IN THE WORLD AND AT A PIVOTAL AND EXCITING POINT IN OUR HISTORY. 

design and craft, ranging from the traditional skills of making through textiles, silversmithing and jewellery and Fashion through to interior design, communication design, product design Engineering and interaction design, have been central to the gsa’s academic portfolio from its founding in 1845.  It has contributed to glasgow as an industrial powerhouse, to the city’s cULTURAL and creative-LED POST-INDUSTRIAL RENAISSANCE and to today’s diverse city-region and position as one of the uks leading creative and knowledge economies.
